How to measure your bed frame

Step 1: Measure the internal frame width (cm) — measure between the inside faces of the rails.

Step 2: Measure the internal frame length (cm) — from inside headboard to inside footboard.

Step 3: Check diagonal measurements (corner-to-corner) to ensure squareness.

Step 4: Measure rail height / recess depth if mattress sits below the top of the rails.

Step 5: Note headboard clearance — tall mattresses can hide headboard details.

Tip: UK frames often have 1–2 cm of slack. Allow a small tolerance when checking fit.

Choosing the right bed and mattress isn’t just about comfort. It’s about making sure they fit perfectly in your home. Our Will It Fit Guide helps you measure your bed frame, mattress, and bedroom space so you can shop with confidence. Whether you’re upgrading to a king-size bed or adding a new mattress, this guide makes it easy to avoid surprises and create the ideal setup for your room.

How to measure your bed and bedroom space

Start with the bed. Take a tape measure and place it at the very top of the headboard, then stretch it down to the foot of the bed to get the length. For the width, measure from one side of the bed frame straight across to the other. If you’re checking the mattress, do the same: head to foot for length, side to side for width. Now measure your bedroom. Stand at one wall and measure across to the opposite wall for the width of the room. Then measure from the back wall to the front for the length. Don’t forget to allow extra space for walking around, opening drawers, and adding bedside tables. A good rule is to leave at least 60 cm of clearance on each side if you can. This way your bed won’t feel cramped and your room will stay practical and comfortable.

Step 1: Measure the width

Start by measuring the width of the wall where you plan to place the bed. Stretch the tape across to the other end and note the measurement. This will tell you the maximum width available for your bed.
Tips:

  • Having two people makes it easier to keep the tape straight and level.
  • Look for radiators, sockets, or skirting boards that might reduce usable space.
  • Aim for at least 60 cm of space on each side for walking and bedside tables.
  • Make sure the bed won’t block doors or wardrobe drawers when opened.
Step 2: Measure the length

Next, measure the length. Place the tape measure at the wall where the headboard will go. Stretch it straight across to the opposite wall and note the measurement. If the room is large or the tape is hard to manage, ask someone to help.
Tips:

  • Continue to work with a partner, easier, more precise. and quicker.
  • Measure at floor level as the bed sits on the floor.
  • Still check for obstacles such as doors, radiators and any other piece of furniture.
  • Plan for extra room if you want a bench, ottoman or storage chest at the foot of the bed.
Step 3: Compare in store

Tips:

  • Measure the full frame: Include headboard and footboard if they extend beyond the mattress.
  • If you're stuck between two options, measure both to see which fits your room best.

Make sure my new mattress will fit in my home

Next, remember that mattresses can be surprisingly big and heavy, especially King or Super King sizes. Before ordering, check that it will fit easily through your main entrance, bedroom door, hallways, and up the stairs. A good rule of thumb is to measure the narrowest point along the route and compare it to your mattress dimensions. If it seems tight, don’t try to bend or fold the mattress, as this can damage it. Most firm and premium mattresses are designed to stay flat and should never be bent.

Make sure your mattress can fit through without hassle especially if you’ve chosen a King or Super King. Stand the mattress upright for better clearance, and angle it by sliding one corner in first, then pivot through. A quick doorway measurement and these simple moves will save you time and stress on delivery day.

  • Measure the width: Place the tape across the inside of the door frame from one side to the other.
  • Measure the height: Measure from the floor to the top of the door frame.
  • Check the diagonal: If the bed or mattress needs to be tilted, measure the diagonal space from the top corner to the opposite bottom corner.
  • Account for obstacles: Look for radiators, skirting boards, or tight hallways near the door that could make maneuvering harder.
  • Compare measurements: Make sure the largest dimension of your bed or mattress is smaller than the doorway width or diagonal clearance.

Before you choose that perfect mattress, make sure it can fit through your stairway. Mattresses are bulky and often rigid, so tight corners, narrow widths, and low ceilings can cause delivery headaches. A quick measurement now saves you from returns or awkward squeezes later. Grab a tape measure and check the stair width, ceiling height, and any turns especially if you’re going for a King or Super King size.

  • Measure the width of the stairs: Place the tape measure across the narrowest point of the stairway, usually between the handrail and the wall.
  • Measure the height clearance: Check the vertical space above the stairs, especially under landings or low ceilings.
  • Measure the turns: If your stairs have a bend or landing, measure the width and height at the tightest corner.
  • Check the diagonal clearance: For tight turns, measure the diagonal space to see if the bed can be tilted through.
  • Compare measurements: Make sure the largest dimension of your bed or mattress can fit through the narrowest point.
HALLWAY2.jpg__PID:95885d30-8de9-4937-b82a-7df89db1cf6e

Hallways can be one of the trickiest spots during delivery, especially for King or Super King mattresses. Before your mattress arrives, measure the hallway at its narrowest point and check for any tight corners or obstacles. If space is limited, stand the mattress upright for better clearance and angle it through bends by leading with one corner and pivoting slowly. Clearing furniture and rugs ahead of time will make the process much smoother.

  • Measure the Narrowest Point: Check the hallway width at its tightest spot, often near door frames or radiators.
  • Plan for Corners: If your hallway has bends, measure the space at those turns to ensure clearance.
  • Clear the Path: Remove furniture, rugs, and anything that could block movement before delivery.
  • Stand the Mattress Upright: Positioning it vertically gives you more clearance in narrow spaces.
  • Angle Around Corners: Lead with one corner and pivot slowly to navigate tight bends without damage.
